Taken from the Blair cottage on Mackinac Island, Michigan, this view has the Fort Mackinac blockhouse at its right edge, tying the scene to the island's old military post. The British built the fort in the late 1700s, and it later served as a U.S. Army post, while the island's cottages and hotels drew summer visitors from the Great Lakes region by the turn of the twentieth century. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed tourist destinations across the country for sale, so the picture shows how travelers were invited to see places like Mackinac.
