Auguste Salzmann's album of Jerusalem, published in Paris in 1856, includes this view of the Jaffa Gate, the western entrance to the walled Old City and the gate that faces the road to the port of Jaffa. Salzmann was a French photographer who made the large paper and albumen prints for the book, which set out to document the city's monuments from the Jewish period onward. As one of the early photographic records of Jerusalem, the plate shows the gate and its surroundings as they stood in the 1850s, before the rapid growth of the city outside the walls later in the century.
