Jaffa Gate is one of the main entrances in the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, set into the western wall on the side facing the road to the port city of Jaffa, and this glass negative shows the passage through it. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency, distributed images like this one in the early twentieth century, and its founder George Grantham Bain assembled a large archive that later passed to the Library of Congress. Pictures of the Old City gates were popular with American and European audiences of the period, who often knew the walled city mainly through travel accounts and religious teaching. The date is not recorded, so the exact year of the exposure remains uncertain.
