Jaffa Gate is one of the main entrances through the Old City walls of Jerusalem, and it takes its name from the road that led west toward the port of Jaffa. The walls were rebuilt under the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 1530s, and the gate has remained a principal passage for travelers and traders since then. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs from the early twentieth century. Its title, taken from the caption cards and not independently verified, points to the stretch of Jaffa Road just outside the gate.
