Published under Nathaniel Currier's own name in New York around 1846, this lithograph takes the whole city of Jerusalem as its subject, a place that is sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. Its hand coloring, added by workers after the stone printing, was a common way to make inexpensive lithographs more appealing to buyers. Currier's firm, which later became Currier & Ives, sold scenes like this to a broad middle-class market in the decades before photography became common. Prints of the Holy Land were especially popular then, fed by growing interest in biblical history and in travel accounts from the region.
