Fire Wood in Jerusalem is one of the glass negatives from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, and its title is the only detail the record gives us. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that circulated images in the early twentieth century, supplied that label on the negative or its caption card, and the library notes it as unverified. The picture shows a wood-gathering scene in a city whose stone streets and household fuel were then a daily concern for ordinary residents, and the bundled fuel and the people handling it offer a quieter view of Jerusalem than the holy sites that dominate most of its photographs.
