Few pictures in this collection show a working market stall as plainly as this one, with a grain seller at his wares in Jerusalem. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news photographs assembled by the Bain News Service, which sold images to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title rests on caption information the service supplied that has not been independently checked, so the exact year is uncertain. Still, the subject reflects the everyday commerce of the old city's markets, where grain, flour and dried goods were sold in quantity to local households.
