Among the Jerusalem views Auguste Salzmann published in 1856, this albumen print shows the Via Dolorosa, the route traditionally followed as the Stations of the Cross, here titled simply "Chemin de la Croix." It appeared as plate 15 in the second volume of *Jérusalem*, a large project that set out to document the city's monuments from the Jewish period to his own day. Salzmann worked in the 1850s with the Gidé and Baudry firm, whose Paris printing of the photographs made the Holy City's streets available to European readers who would never make the journey. The picture is worth studying for its narrow, stone-walled lane, which shows how the city's old streets looked to a mid-century camera.
