This engraving imagines Jerusalem as it may have looked in the age of King Solomon, with the Temple rising at the center of the walled city. Images like this were popular in Europe from the 17th through the 19th centuries, when Bible illustrators and map makers tried to reconstruct biblical sites that no artist had ever seen. The Temple, completed in the 10th century BCE according to the biblical account, was the holiest site in ancient Judaism, and its destruction by the Babylonians in 586 BCE shaped Jewish memory ever after. Viewers should keep in mind that the scene is a reconstruction based on scripture and imagination rather than a record of the actual city.
