Taken from the rise called New Calvary, north of the Old City, this stereograph looks back toward the ancient ridge that the title identifies as the City of David. The card dates to 1897, when Underwood & Underwood held the copyright, and it is numbered 31 in the publisher's series, with William I. Marshall credited as publisher. Seen through a stereoscope, the two paired images gave walls, rooftops and terraced hillsides a convincing depth, which made such cards a popular way for late nineteenth-century viewers to visit Jerusalem from their parlors.
