Taken from the Mount of Olives, this stereograph looks down over the Old City of Jerusalem, and its catalogers singled out the Orthodox churches visible in the view. The card dates to 1919, in the years after British forces took Jerusalem from the Ottoman government in late 1917. Keystone View Company, a Pennsylvania firm that sold stereoscopic cards widely, made it to be viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which gave the flat print a sense of depth. Such cards let armchair travelers see distant holy places up close.
