Roberts drew this view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives during his 1839 journey through the Near East, and the lithograph was published in the first volume of The Holy Land, which appeared in parts between 1842 and 1845. The vantage point is the traditional hill east of the walled city, a spot long favored by pilgrims and travelers for its sweeping look across the Kidron Valley toward the Temple area. Louis Haghe's lithography translated Roberts's sketches into color plates that were widely bought by Victorian readers who could not make the journey themselves. The print is a useful record of how the city looked to European eyes in the years before major modern expansion beyond its walls.
