Few views of the 1904 fair in St. Louis show the Walls of Jerusalem, a midway attraction that reproduced the ancient walls of the Holy City, alongside the great Ferris wheel rising above the fairgrounds. The stereograph was published by the H.C. White Co., which sold paired views like this one for viewing through a stereoscope. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition marked the centennial of the 1803 land deal that doubled the nation's territory, and its mix of replicas of distant places and mechanical rides made it a showcase of the era's popular entertainment. The juxtaposition here, an ancient-style wall beside a modern steel wheel, captures that contrast.
