The Tombs of the Judges sit on the Jerusalem hillside, cut into the rock in the ancient style that drew photographers to the region in the early twentieth century. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the Bain News Service's large archive of news and travel pictures, and its title comes from caption cards the agency wrote, not from a verified source. Bain's photographers and their agents often sent scenes like this to American newspapers and magazines, which fed a public appetite for images of the Holy Land. The date is not recorded, so the picture is best read as a document of how the site looked to outside visitors of that era.
