A Bethlehem townsman sits astride his donkey in this hand-colored photochrom, one of the Holy Land views that the Detroit Publishing Company sold in bulk to travelers and armchair readers. The process, a early color reproduction method that layered several lithographic stones, was developed in Switzerland and used by the Detroit firm from the 1890s onward to turn studio-quality photographs into bright, painterly prints. Pictures of local people like this one were popular with Western buyers who wanted a glimpse of daily life in Palestine, though the posed subject and the tinted palette show how such scenes were shaped for the market.
