A general view of Jerusalem, print no. 15145 in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of *Views of the Holy Land*, shows the city as American travelers of the 1890s might have seen it. Its color comes from the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to several lithographic stones, each inked in a different hue and printed in register, then retouched by hand. Detroit Publishing sold such views as souvenirs and armchair travel pictures to a public eager for images of biblical sites. The print records both the city's appearance and the color process that made these views popular.
