The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is traditionally held by Christians to stand on the site of Jesus's crucifixion, burial and resurrection, which makes its interior one of the most visited and most contested spaces in the Christian world. The building has been rebuilt and remodeled many times since the fourth century, and its chambers are divided among several churches, including the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Armenian Apostolic communities, whose shared arrangements have long shaped how the interior is used. Images of the interior often draw attention to its dim, layered architecture, where chapels, shrines and the stone of the tomb sit side by side under a complex of galleries and lamps.
