Few of David Roberts's Holy Land views take the viewer below ground, which makes this crypt of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem a distinctive plate in the series. Roberts sketched the scene on his 1839 journey, and Louis Haghe transferred those drawings into color lithographs for the London edition issued by F. G. Moon in the early 1840s. The church is traditionally held to stand on the site of Golgotha and the tomb of Jesus, so its chambers drew pilgrims of several Christian traditions, and Roberts's work helped bring such places to European readers who could not travel there themselves.
