This color lithograph shows the entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and it serves as the title page of the first volume of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*. Scottish painter David Roberts made the drawings on his travels in the Near East in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned them into lithographs. Published in London by F.G. Moon in parts between 1842 and 1845, the series was among the most widely circulated illustrated views of the region. Its images shaped how many European and American readers pictured biblical sites in the decades before photography became common there.
