The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the most visited and contested sites in Christianity, and this print shows it as David Roberts drew it on his travels in the Near East in the late 1830s. Roberts made his sketches on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned them into color lithographs for the multi-part set The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, issued in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. The plates were prized for their detail and their warm, atmospheric light, and they shaped how many European and American readers imagined the Holy Land before photography became common there.
