A market square in Bethlehem, a town in the hills south of Jerusalem that now lies in the West Bank, is the subject here. It was made as a photochrom, a process that printed a black-and-white photograph from several lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, to build up the tints. The Detroit Publishing Company issued the view as number 15143 in its 1905 catalog of Holy Land scenes, which sold these images to American buyers. The date range places it in the 1890s, when photochrom was at its most popular, and the color gives a sense of everyday commerce in a town better known for its religious sites.
