The Mount of Olives rises just east of the Old City, and from its slopes the walls, domes and minarets of Jerusalem spread out below in one of the most familiar views in the Holy Land. Travelers and artists have stood on this ridge for centuries, and the high vantage point made it a favorite subject for 19th-century painters and engravers who sought to show the city as a sacred and layered whole. Its Jewish cemetery, which has held burials for well over two thousand years, lies on the same slope, so the view takes in both the living city and its ancient dead.
