Auguste Salzmann's 1856 survey of Jerusalem was one of the first attempts to document the city's monuments photographically, and this view was issued as a plate in its second volume. Salzmann worked in the region in the early 1850s, photographing ancient and medieval structures in the Old City and its surroundings, and the publication was produced in Paris by the firm Gidé et J. Baudry. The print is an albumen silver process image, a method then newly popular for its sharp detail and rich tonal range. Its place in a published book, rather than as a standalone picture, shows how photography was being used to record the Holy City for European readers.
