The Golden Gate, the sealed eastern portal of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, is the subject here, shown with a stretch of the ancient walls beside it. David Roberts drew the scene on his Holy Land tour in the 1830s, and Louis Haghe turned those sketches into lithographs for the multi-part set published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's views were prized for their careful architecture and their romantic, sun-washed light, and they shaped how many nineteenth-century European readers pictured the city. This plate appeared in the first volume of that series.
