Auguste Salzmann's albumen print shows a doorway rather than the whole façade, which makes it a study in stone and shadow at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It comes from *Jérusalem; étude et reproduction photographique des monuments de la Ville Sainte*, a large survey of Jerusalem's monuments published in Paris by Gidé and J. Baudry in 1856. Salzmann worked in the Holy Land in the mid-1850s, and his photographs were among the earliest careful records of the city's architecture. The church has stood on a site traditionally identified as Christ's burial place since the time of Constantine, and its entrances have been a focus for pilgrims for centuries.
