The domes in question crown the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the structure that Christian tradition holds marks the site of Jesus's crucifixion and burial, and this albumen print shows them as they stood in the 1850s. It comes from Auguste Salzmann's *Jérusalem*, a large photographic survey of the city's monuments published in Paris by Gidé and J. Baudry in 1856. Salzmann's project was among the earliest attempts to document Jerusalem's architecture photographically, and his plates were notable for their precision at a time when the city was still reached mainly by long overland or sea journeys. Looking closely, viewers can see how the church's roofline blends several building campaigns across many centuries.
