This print shows the Tomb of Zechariah, a freestanding rock-cut monument in the Kidron Valley below the eastern wall of Jerusalem's Old City. Its base is carved from the bedrock, and its Ionic columns and pyramidal cap make it one of the city's most recognizable ancient tombs, though the name is a later tradition and the monument is generally dated to the Hellenistic or Herodian period. Auguste Salzmann photographed it during his survey of the Holy City's monuments, and the image was published in Paris in 1856 as an albumen print, a process that gave mid-century photographs their fine detail and tonal range.
