Plate 2 from the third volume of Auguste Salzmann's *Jérusalem* shows the eastern face of the walls enclosing the Temple Mount, the long stone barrier that rises above the Kidron Valley. Salzmann made his photographs in Jerusalem in the mid-1850s, when the medium was still new, and this print is a salted paper print made from a paper negative. Published in Paris in 1856 by Gidé et J. Baudry and printed by the Blanquart-Evrard workshop in Lille, the set was among the earliest systematic photographic surveys of the city's monuments. Its clear, measured view of the massive masonry shows how early photographers used the camera to record architecture for scholars and readers far away.
