Plate 1 of the second volume of Auguste Salzmann's 1856 album *Jérusalem* shows the eastern face of the walls enclosing the Temple Mount. Much of that massive dressed masonry dates to the Herodian expansion of the first century BCE and CE, and Salzmann recorded it as a salted paper print, a process that gives the stone a soft, warm tone. The prints were made at the Blanquart-Evrard workshop in Lille and published by Gidé and Baudry in Paris. As one of the earliest systematic photographic surveys of Jerusalem, the plate is valued for its record of the walls as much as for its technique.
