Salzmann's view of the east face of the Temple enclosure wall is the plate that stands out here: it records the massive dressed stones at the city's eastern edge rather than the domed shrines above them. Auguste Salzmann, a French photographer and architectural historian, made the picture during his Jerusalem campaign in the mid-1850s, when photography was still new and expensive to carry into the field. It appeared as plate 3 in the second volume of his 1856 survey of the city's monuments, published in Paris. The salted paper process, which printed from a paper negative, gives the stone a soft, slightly warm tone. Viewers today often note how the scale of the lowest courses, which date to the Herodian period, dwarfs the figures and structures around them.
