Unlike the single-monument views on this board, this print is a panorama, a wide sweep of the Holy City meant to be read across the full width of the sheet. It comes from Auguste Salzmann's *Jérusalem*, a volume issued in Paris in 1856 that set out to photograph the city's monuments from the Judaic period to the present. Salzmann worked in Jerusalem in 1854, and the plates were printed by the Blanquart-Evrard workshop in Lille using the albumen process, which gave the images their fine detail and tonal range. Looking across the rooftops, domes and walls, you are seeing one of the earliest sustained attempts to document the city's architecture by photography.
