Among the plates in Auguste Salzmann's 1856 survey of Jerusalem, this numbered panorama stands out for its sweep, offering a broad view of the city rather than a study of a single monument. Salzmann worked in the Holy City in 1854, making paper negatives of its sacred sites, and the resulting prints were issued in Paris by Gidé et J. Baudry. This albumen print was made by Blanquart-Evrard's firm in Lille, one of the pioneering printing houses of the period, which helps explain its fine tonal detail. Today it reads as an early attempt to document a city of old walls and domes at a moment when photography was still new.
