Titled for the southern side of the city, this view comes from Auguste Salzmann's album *Jérusalem*, published in Paris in 1856 by Gidé and J. Baudry. It is a salted paper print, made from a paper negative and produced at the Blanquart-Evrard workshop in Lille. Salzmann's survey was among the earliest photographic attempts to document the monuments of the Holy City, from ancient Jewish remains to later structures. The album shows how photographers of the 1850s recorded architecture for scholars and armchair travelers alike.
