Few places in Jerusalem carry as much weight as the garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives, traditionally identified as Gethsemane, and this view turns to its trees rather than the city walls that dominate most images of the Holy City. It comes from Auguste Salzmann's *Jérusalem*, a study of the city's monuments published in Paris in 1856, two years after he photographed the sites during his travels in the Levant. The albumen prints in that volume let armchair readers in France study places they would never see for themselves. The olive trees are worth a closer look: their trunks are gnarled and hollowed with age, which helped give the garden its air of antiquity for nineteenth-century visitors.
