Known as the Tombs of the Kings, this rock-cut complex north of Jerusalem's walls was not a royal burial site; the name is a misnomer. Tradition links it to Queen Helena of Adiabene, but scholars generally date it to the first century and see it as a family necropolis of a wealthy Jewish household. Auguste Salzmann made this albumen print in 1856 for his multi-volume survey of the city's monuments, one of the earliest large photographic records of Jerusalem, and it captures the carved courtyard and tomb entrances as a mid-century camera recorded them.
