The Damascus Gate, the most elaborate of Jerusalem's surviving city gates, is the subject here, shown as a single albumen print from Auguste Salzmann's 1856 survey of the city's monuments. Salzmann, a French photographer, traveled to Jerusalem in the early 1850s and produced large-format images of the Holy City's walls, gates and sacred sites, which Gidé and J. Baudry issued in Paris as a published series. The gate, built by the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 1530s, stands on the north wall and was the main entrance for travelers coming from Damascus and the north. Salzmann's print is valued as one of the early photographic records of the city, made when such views were still rare and before the rapid changes of later decades.
