The monument shown here is the rock-cut tomb in the Kidron Valley, outside the eastern wall of Jerusalem, which has long been called the Tomb of Absalom. Its tall, carved cube and conical cap stand out from the surrounding cliff face, and local tradition has linked it to David's rebellious son since at least the medieval period, though modern scholars date it centuries after his time. Auguste Salzmann made the photographs in Jerusalem around 1854, and this albumen print comes from his 1856 Paris publication, one of the earliest systematic photographic records of the city's ancient sites. The image shows how photography was being used to document places that travelers had previously known mainly through drawings.
