The subject here is Solomon's dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, described in 1 Kings 8 and 2 Chronicles 5 through 7, when the Ark of the Covenant was brought into the inner sanctuary and a cloud is said to have filled the house of the Lord. The painting is by William Hole, a Scottish artist known for his illustrations of biblical scenes. This color halftone was reproduced around 1925 by Eyre & Spottiswoode's Bible Warehouse in London, where it was numbered as one plate in a series. Prints like this carried such scenes into homes, Sunday schools and family Bibles.
