Few sites in Jerusalem carry as specific a story as this ruined prison, which tradition links to the imprisonment of the apostle Peter described in the Acts of the Apostles. Auguste Salzmann made the photograph during his survey of the city's monuments, and this albumen print appeared in 1856 as plate 14 of the third volume of his *Jérusalem*. Salzmann's project was among the earliest systematic photographic records of the Holy City, and the Paris firm Gidé and J. Baudry's printing helped European viewers see ancient stonework that most had known only from engravings and travel accounts.
