Framed by tree trunks and branches, the Temple of the Warriors rises at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan peninsula of southeastern Mexico. The stepped pyramid, built by the Maya and later rebuilt in a style linked to the Toltecs, is known for its colonnades of carved warrior figures and a reclining chac mool statue at its summit. Photographer Laura Gilpin, better known for her studies of the American Southwest, made this view in 1932, when the ruins were drawing growing numbers of visitors and archaeologists. The screen of foliage suggests a site only partly reclaimed by the surrounding jungle.
