Laura Gilpin's 1932 photograph turns to the feathered serpent columns at the Temple of the Warriors in Chichen Itza, on the Yucatan Peninsula, where carved serpent shapes line the approach to the temple's colonnade. Chichen Itza was a major Maya city whose architecture blends Maya styles with influences from later Toltec-era traditions, and the feathered serpent, Kukulcan in Maya belief, appears throughout its buildings. Gilpin, an American photographer known for her studies of the American Southwest and of Indigenous peoples, documented ancient sites as well as living communities, so this image sits within a broader interest in Native American and Mesoamerican culture. The record itself is thin, so details of the print's original use are not confirmed.
