Minerva and Liberty, the two figures named in this woodcut's subject headings, set it apart from the many allegorical prints of its decade. Jared Bell of New York registered it for copyright on April 2, 1834, and the print's title places it within the common American image of the republic as a "temple" built on liberty. Printed on wove paper in the 1830s, when cheap woodcuts and lithographs carried patriotic and political messages to a broad public, it shows how the classical goddess of wisdom and arts was used to express national ideals.
