The title, "Must liberty's light go out?", frames this wood engraving around the Statue of Liberty's torch, a symbol that would have been familiar to any reader of the New York American in May 1917. The picture ran in that paper's editorial pages only weeks after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, a period when wartime measures and debates over free speech and dissent were pressing public questions. Windsor McCay, best known for the comic strip *Little Nemo*, drew it for the Hearst papers, where he produced editorial cartoons alongside his comic work.
