This picture is a 1947 photographic reproduction of an engraving of Russian warriors taken from a 1557 Vienna edition of Sigismund von Herberstein's account of Muscovy, *Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii*. Herberstein, an Austrian diplomat, made two trips to Moscow in the 1510s and 1520s, and his book was one of the most widely read Western descriptions of Russia in the sixteenth century. Its illustrations, including figures like these soldiers, shaped European ideas about Russian dress, arms, and military life for generations. The caption information on the source card is unverified, so the exact edition and page should be checked before the image is cited.
