François de Malherbe (1555–1628) was a French poet and critic who set the standards of classical clarity and order that shaped French verse for generations after him. This engraving presents him as a dignified man of letters, though the record gives no date and identifies the engraver only tentatively, as "C.F.?", working from a drawing by Dumotier. Malherbe's reforms, which favored regular meter and disciplined diction over the looser style of the Pléiade poets, made him a central figure in the literary culture of the court of Henry IV and Louis XIII. Portraits like this one circulated widely in that period as a way of honoring writers whose reputations rested on their influence.
