Lluís Companys, president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, is the face of this 1937 poster, and its words come from a rally he addressed at the Monumental bullring in Barcelona on 14 March 1937, Madrid Day. The headline, "Madrid leños! Cataluña os ama," tells the Spanish capital that Catalonia stood with it while Nationalist forces besieged the city. The Propaganda Commissariat of the Generalitat issued the poster as an offset lithograph. Companys was executed by Franco's regime in 1940, which gives his portrait a sombre weight for viewers today.
