The title, which translates as "Spain fights for her independence, for peace and solidarity among all peoples," pairs national defense with an appeal to international solidarity. The Subsecretaría de Propaganda of the Spanish Republic issued this color lithograph sometime between 1936 and 1939, while the Republic was fighting the nationalist uprising led by General Francisco Franco that began in July 1936. Posters like this were printed in quantity to rally soldiers and civilians, and the poster's focus on military personnel reflects how central the army was to the war.
