Printed in Valencia in 1936, this lithograph carries a title that frames the Spanish struggle as a fight for freedom and culture shared by all peoples, not only by Spaniards. The Republic's propaganda offices produced posters like it in the first months after the military uprising of July 1936, when Valencia was still under Republican control and the government relied on mass printing to rally workers and their families. Its emphasis on the working class and the family reflects how the Republican cause was presented to ordinary people: as a defense of their homes, labor and schools. The bold color and direct, legible design show the poster-making of that early wartime moment.
