Among the many Spanish Civil War posters that appealed to ordinary workers, this Valencia lithograph focuses on the economics of food. Its slogan claims that 100 million pesetas' worth of eggs were imported from abroad each year and urges people to raise poultry at home to cut that cost. The poster was issued by a joint committee of the UGT, CNT and AIT unions, and it reflects the Republican drive for self-sufficiency and the conservation of foreign currency during the war from 1936 to 1939. After the government moved to Valencia in late 1936, the city became a major center for such wartime publishing.
