Hands are the central image of this color lithograph, and its title, "The claw of the Italian invader wants to enslave us," states the threat outright. Printed in Madrid between 1936 and 1939 by the Sindicato de Profesionales de Bellas Artes, an artists' union, with backing from the Junta Delegada de Defensa de Madrid, it was made for the Republic during the Spanish Civil War. Italy sent troops and aircraft to aid General Franco's Nationalists after the war began in July 1936, and posters like this one cast that foreign help as a bid to seize the country. Its bold colors and blunt symbolism were typical of Republican propaganda.
